History

1949 to 1967

Kepple Family Farm & Father & Sons

Mike Kepple was born in 1949 and was the youngest of 7. His family milked an average of 30 Guernsey cows on their 249-acre dairy and agriculture farm southwest of Farmington IL. Their main source of income was predominantly the dairy farm. Milk at that time was the bread and butter of the business. Since the age of 6 years old, Mike had many responsibilities including bailing hay, working in the corn and bean fields and tending the dairy cows. Mike and his family discovered that if they had a radio playing for the dairy cows, they would produce more milk. Two of Mike's favorite memories were feeding the calves and learning early on that when using a manure spreader in the fields, it was best to make sure the wind was blowing away from him!

Award Winning Guernsey Bull & Dairy Cows

The Kepple family participated in dairy shows in the midwest, and would show their prize Guernsey cows. When Mike was a freshman in high school, their special bull named "Omar" was awarded the world grand champion bull at the 1964 international dairy show held in Chicago. This event was a cherished memory in their family.
As shown in the picture, junior and senior yearlings needed to be posed and groomed in specific ways. They were washed, combed, groomed, and had their noses shined. Family members would spend hours training with the cattle in order to meet judging requirements on stance, walk and posture. Judges would look for quality attributes which would indicate the caliber of the herd. These 4 were a reflection of the 30 cows that they raised at the time on their small farm. To date, his older brother Tom owns and operates the Kepple family farm.

Did you know: Dairy farms today average 1000+ head of cattle and are 24 hour operations. The cows are not generally shown and are raised primarily for the milk.

How Cravings Started it All

One night Mike had a craving for a vanilla milkshake and couldn't find an ice cream store that was open. His frustration led him to call his lawyer the next day to inquire who owned the local Dairy Queens. After the lawyer’s communicated with the Minneapolis headquarters, he was directed to Gilbert Stein based in Springfield Illinois. It just so happens that Gilbert Stein was one of the original founders for Dairy Queen. Six months later, Mike received the news that Gilbert Stein was interested in selling the two Dairy Queens, originally located on Farmington Road and Sheridan/Loucks Road. When they met in person, Mike was surprised to learn that Stein had worked for a dairy operation company that hauled milk for Mike’s family farm, which led to the purchase agreement from Mike and Linda Kepple.

Did You Know: The cost of an ice cream cone in 1960 was 5 cents for a small cone, 10 cents for a large cone and sundaes were 8 cents.
